Timmins, ON In 2008, the City of Timmins established a committee that would be responsible for the co-ordination of an ambitious 4 year centennial celebration that recognized and celebrated 4 important milestones in the history of the City of Timmins: 100 Years of Mining Exploration, 100 Years of Mining Production and this year, 100 Years of the Rebuilding of Whitney and Tisdale while remembering the Great Porcupine Fire of 1911. To date many anniversary projects were launched in an effort to recognize the four milestones being celebrated and we expect to see many more events and anniversary projects through to Dec 31 2012 as we continue the anniversary celebrations, and recognize 100 Years of Timmins.
The City of Timmins 100th Community Anniversary Committee has agreed to lead the 2012 celebration of our City’s birthday and activities will be planned for January 1st 2012, the week of August 6th, with closing ceremonies taking place on December 31st 2012.
“Today, on behalf of the Anniversary Events Committee, I am pleased to announce that the City’s birthday party will kick off on January 1, 2012 with a spectacular musical and figure skating production that will feature performances by the Timmins Porcupine Figure Skating Club, the Tisdale Skating Club, the Timmins Symphony Orchestra and seven-time Canadian Figure Skating and three-time World Champion, Elvis Stojko” said Tracy Hautanen, Chair of the Anniversary Events Sub Committee.
“Symphony on Ice will take place at 1pm from the historic McIntyre Arena, home to many past figure skating icons and world class skating performances” added Clarice Power, Chair of the Anniversary Opening Ceremony Steering Committee and no stranger to the world of professional figure skating.
When reached at home, Canadian skating sensation Elvis Stojko said “I am excited to come back to the city of Timmins. The energy of the fans in the northern cities always make it enjoyable to perform, especially when you are included in such a significant event like this 100th anniversary celebration of the City. A great way to start off the New Year! I look forward to being a part of some other festivities and I will definitely be bringing a parka!”
Tickets for “Symphony on Ice” go on sale tomorrow October 4th and are available at the Leisure Services Office located at the McIntyre Community Centre Office. Office hours are from 9am to 4pm and reserved seating is available at $10.00 / seat.
In addition to the “main event”, the day will kick off with the Mayor’s New Year’s Day Levee at 11:30 am from the McIntyre Auditorium and will end with a public skate featuring the Timmins Symphony Orchestra at 4pm, shortly after the Symphony on Ice show concludes. A non-perishable donation supporting the local food banks will be required as admission to the public skate.
“I look forward to celebrating the City’s 100th birthday with members of our community and I know, based on the January 1 program announced today, that this birthday celebration will be like none other. The City of Timmins has come a long way since its humble beginnings, and we have much to celebrate. We are blessed with a rich past and as I reflect on our many accomplishments, I look forward, with anticipation, to a brighter future” concluded Mayor Tom Laughren.
Details of all City led 2012 events will be announced soon. The 100th Community Anniversary Committee is inviting all service clubs and organizations to consider hosting an event during the week of August 6, 2012. “We are hoping to attract community partners in an effort to provide residents, past and present, with a record number of activities the week of August 6th. To do so would encourage the many delegates attending the Aug 3-5 Civic Holiday weekend TH&VS reunion to stay and play another day in our City” concluded Guy Lamarche, Manager, Tourism, Events & Communications.

Our municipality owes its existence to the initiative and efforts of prospectors by the names of Harry Preston, Sandy McIntyre and Benny Hollinger, who in the early 1900′s discovered gold. Financiers Noah and Henry Timmins were responsible for the development of the Hollinger Mine and, thus, the name Timmins came to the forefront and has been our proud designation ever since.
