Development of a Community Vision/Strategic Action Plan

The City of Timmins is pleased to announce that it is moving forward with the issuance of a Request For Proposals for the development of a community vision/strategic action plan that will provide the City of Timmins with a blueprint that will govern and establish strategic direction for economic and community development over the next ten (10) years.

“With the closure of the Xstrata metallurgical site, the continued downturn in the forest economy and the possible closure of the Kidd mine in 2017, a strong strategic plan is needed to address concerns about the economic future of our community. The plan will highlight opportunities that should be considered in an effort to create new wealth and sustainability. This planning exercise was identified as a key priority of Council during my inaugural address for 2011 and so Im pleased to see this initiative go forward” stated Mayor Tom Laughren.

This process will be funded by the Provincial Government and will undertake a strategic planning process that includes an extensive public consultation process to determine priorities for future direction, and economic/community development encompassing all sectors of our community life. Timmins can no longer be dependent on primary resources for economic renewal. Diversification ideas are a primary goal of this exercise.

“An essential and integral component of the strategic planning process is the development of a community adjustment committee (CAC). The CAC will be comprised of representatives from the City of Timmins, the Timmins Economic Development Corporation, the Timmins Chamber of Commerce, government ministries and agencies and all sectors of the Timmins economy.” continued Mayor Laughren.

The role and objectives of the CAC will be as follows:

  • to produce an Economic Impact Assessment
  • to involve all sectors of the Timmins economy to identify needs, set priorities and find solutions within the context of an economic strategic planning process which will identify economic development and diversification opportunities
