On September 29, 2011, Mayor Tom Laughren on behalf of Timmins City Council signed an historic agreement with the Chiefs of the Mushkegowuk Council in Moose Factory Ontario.
The purpose of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is to initiate a process for Timmins and Mushkegowuk to work together to create long term partnerships that will build healthy sustainable economies. The Mushkegowuk Council and the City of Timmins acknowledge a shared responsibility to protect the environment because the common goal is to ensure that future generations will continue to benefit from the rich resources the land provides to the Timmins and Mushkegowuk communities.
This MOU will strengthen Timmins and Mushkegowuk resolve to build upon and maintain an open dialogue between the Timmins community and Mushkegowuk People based on mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation, while recognizing cultural, linguistic and territorial differences. Mushkegowuk and Timmins will initiate business activities and program incentives that will connect various sectors of the Timmins community, Mushkegowuk People, and stakeholders. In addition, this MOU will recognize and respect the Treaty and Aboriginal Rights of Mushkegowuk People, and the right to carry out their traditional pursuits within their traditional territory in a peaceful, respectful and unrestricted manner.
The Grand Chief of the Mushkegowuk Council Stan Louttit, stated, “This MOU recognizes Timmins as a regional service centre for Northern Ontario and sets the framework for the Mushkegowuk and Timmins communities to initiate economic development opportunities and partnerships for years to come.”
Timmins Mayor Tom Laughren stated, “The Mushkegowuk communities are our neighbours and are an integral component to the development of Northern Ontario. This MOU reinforces Timmins’ desire to work with the Mushkegowuk communities for the betterment of all.”

Our municipality owes its existence to the initiative and efforts of prospectors by the names of Harry Preston, Sandy McIntyre and Benny Hollinger, who in the early 1900′s discovered gold. Financiers Noah and Henry Timmins were responsible for the development of the Hollinger Mine and, thus, the name Timmins came to the forefront and has been our proud designation ever since.
