City to Receive $3 Million for Connecting Link Project
Just as construction is set to begin on Segment 5 of the Connecting Link project, the City of Timmins is pleased to announce confirmation of $3 Million in funding from the Ministry of Transportation through their 2021-22 Connecting Links Program.

The Timmins connecting link is one of the largest in the province, including just over 21 km of highway. Ontario is helping municipalities repair their roadways and bridges that connect two ends of a provincial highway through a community or to a border crossing. Following delays due to COVID-19, work on the city’s connecting link can now proceed. This year’s work will see reconstruction of Algonquin Blvd. West between Mattagami Blvd. South and Theriault Blvd.

Timmins CAO Dave Landers explained that the work will be extensive with full-depth reconstruction of the roadway, replacement of underground services like water, and pole relocation.

“The work in this area is necessary due to the condition of the roadway and underlying infrastructure,” said Landers. “It has been identified as priority and we are happy to be able to move forward with assistance from government funding. This is the third time that the City of Timmins has successfully lobbied and received the maximum funding allowed under the provincial program.”

“Timmins’ connecting link is the main artery through the city. It connects residents, businesses and industry and helps drive our economy,” said Mayor George Pirie. “The extent of work required to upgrade and maintain our roads would not be possible without funding from the Ministry of Transportation and Ontario government. I want to thank our engineering team and staff who have helped us secure this funding by working with the Ministry and emphasizing the importance of this project. I would also like to thank Minister Mulroney with the Ministry of Transportation on behalf of the Government of Ontario for continuing to work with the City of Timmins to complete work on this critical roadway.”
