New Use of City Land Set Fines Passed By Council
At last night’s council meeting, Council approved imposing a $1,000 fine for illegal dumping of garbage on lands owned by the City of Timmins.

The approval was part of By-law 2021-8565, an update of original by-law 2007-6452, to establish Use of Property Set Fines including depositing garbage on both city owned land and private property.

The update came after a request from Mayor George Pirie to increase fines associated with illegal dumping.

“We’ve all seen the photos on social media,” says Mayor George Pirie. “There is an issue of illegal dumping in the city and we would be remiss if we didn’t do everything possible to come up with a solution. Increasing the fees is a deterrent, meant to discourage offenders who feel that treating our land and environment with such disrespect is appropriate.”

A $1,000 fine has also been set for fouling lands owned by the City, defined as the defacement of city property.
