Part-Time 911 Communication Operators (Timmins Police Service)

The Timmins Police Service is seeking high caliber applicants who can meet the demands of our community, our officers, and fellow Communications Operators. Successful applicants will be working in a high stress, interactive team setting, performing the roles of Call Taker and Dispatcher.

 

Job Title:                    Part-Time 911 Communication Operator

Location:                    Timmins Police Service, 185 Spruce St. South Timmins

Hours of Work:          Up to 12-hour rotating shifts, working days and nights in a 24 hour/day, 365 day/year operation, including weekends and statutory holidays. You must be flexible in terms of hours of work and provide on call support as needed.

Salary:                          Starting at $ 29.67 per/hour (as of January 1, 2023)

(In accordance with Timmins Police Association – Civilian Members Agreement)

 

   

GENERAL DUTIES

The Communication Operator is comprised of call-taking and dispatching emergency calls for service for Police, Fire and EMS throughout the Northeast and James Bay Regions. Success in this position requires competency in stress management, judgment, and teamwork skills. An ability to deal effectively with people in stressful (sometimes life threatening) situations in a fast-paced emergency response environment with constant interruptions and background noise. The ability to interact with emergency responders on the radio, Call Takers/Dispatchers in the room, and people on the phone simultaneously is necessary to ensure public and emergency responder safety. A Communications Operator is highly flexible and able to respond to changing priorities. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Responding to and assessing emergency and non-emergency calls for Police, Fire, and EMS from individuals experiencing varying degrees of trauma

  • Gathering information quickly and accurately using our computer aided dispatch (CAD) system

  • Directing responders to calls for service

  • Communicating information with precision in a calm, clear, and confident voice

  • Continuously monitor responders locations, anticipating resources required, and taking prompt action, in accordance with policy.

     

    REQUIREMENTS

     

    Candidates in the Part-Time Communication Operator Pool must meet the following criteria to be considered:

     

  • Legally entitled to work in Canada

  • At least eighteen (18) years of age

  • No criminal convictions for which a pardon has not been granted.

  • Willing and able to work up to 12 hour rotating shifts in a 24 hours/day, 365 days/year

  • Must pass a security clearance as well as a background investigation, credit check, and reference checks

  • Clear English verbal/written communication and comprehension skills

  • Proficiency in typing at 35 words per minute with 90% accuracy

  • Standard First-Aid and CPR Certificate

  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination mandatory


EDUCATION

Minimum Grade 12 Diploma, or the equivalent

 

OTHER REQUIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE

  • Clear French verbal communication and comprehension skills

  • Calm and even tempered disposition

  • Ability to work effectively under pressure

  • Decisiveness and willingness to take initiative

  • Excellent multi-tasking, organizational, and computer skills

  • Ability to take direction/correction, especially during training period

  • Good knowledge/familiarity with the City of Timmins and surrounding Regions, including major landmarks, streets, and highways

 

TRAINING

Training will consist of time spent in a class room setting and mandatory training courses provided by the Timmins Police Service followed by several weeks of on-the-job training with a training coach following a regular shift rotation.

During the training period, you must be willing and able to commit to reading and studying several hundred pages of manuals, taking notes, completing assignments, and completing and passing practical and written examinations.
