MAYOR PIRIE MEETS WITH THE MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE, FOOD AND RURAL AFFAIRS AT AMO
Timmins, ON – At the Association of Municipalities of Ontario’s Annual Conference in Ottawa, Mayor Pirie met with Minister Ernie Hardeman, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

“The Great Clay Belt is Ontario’s next great economic opportunity.  The Great Clay Belt has potentially more arable land than Manitoba.  Changes in climate and advancements in agricultural techniques and technology make the condition right for a significant agricultural expansion in northeastern Ontario that would mirror what we have already seen occur across the border in northern Quebec,” explained Mayor Pirie.  “We have asked for Minister Hardeman’s support as we continue to explore and develop agricultural opportunities in the region along with our industry partners.”

The Great Clay Belt’s 10.2 million acres offers the opportunity for large scale farming for export markets.  Timmins with working alongside the Northeast Community Network to realize the economic opportunity this presents.
