What is the Elderly Property Tax Rebate?
It is a credit of $300.00 that the City of Timmins will issue to qualified taxpayers in a form of a credit against their tax account.
Who Qualifies?
- Be receiving the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) from the Federal Government
- Be a City of Timmins resident
- Be 65 years old, as of December 31 of the application tax year
- Be assessed as the owner of the residential property for the entire current year
- Occupy a single family dwelling unit in the City of Timmins on which municipal taxes have been levied.
What is the G.I.S.?
The Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) is an income tested, monthly benefit for seniors with limited incomes. It is a benefit that low income seniors receive in addition to their Old Age Security Pension. The guaranteed income supplement that you received in the tax year, in addition to the net amount of a spouse's allowance, are shown in box 21 of your T4A(OAS) slip and must be reported as income.
How do I know if I receive the G.I.S.?
To verify whether or not you receive the GIS, please contact Service Canada at 1-800-277-9914.
When can I submit my application?
You can submit your application from January 1st to December 31st within the current year.
Do I have to submit an application every year?
Yes. The taxpayers are responsible to apply for this rebate on an annual basis.
Will the City send an application every year?
No. It is the responsibility of taxpayers to either go online and fill out the application or pick up an application at City Hall. Click here to view the application online.
