After a warm weekend with rain, the City’s Public Works Department is mobilizing crews to tackle potholes, frozen culverts, and potential washouts on roads across Timmins. Algonquin Blvd. East, through the downtown core, is particularly pitted and the City is asking commercial vehicles and heavy trucks to start using the Laforest Rd. truck detour now.
“The truck detour will be going into effect once Connecting Link construction starts,” says Ken Krcel, Director of Public Works and Environmental Services. “This section of Algonquin Blvd. East will be fully resurfaced as part of this year’s work, but if we could move the heavier commercial vehicles off the road now, it will help preserve the temporary patches that we’re applying to the potholes on Algonquin Blvd.”
Public Works uses a high-performance cold mix to patch potholes during the spring. It can be applied in all weather conditions, but is susceptible to vehicle traffic, road bed movement, and water. By moving heavier trucks off the Connecting Link now, the hope is to keep the potholes filled until construction starts in the next few weeks. The City’s contractor, Belanger Construction Ltd. is in town this week installing temporary traffic controls. While Algonquin will remain open until Connecting Link construction starts, truck detour signs should be in place by end of week and a notice of detour will be broadcast on Municipal511.
The standard truck detour will allow trucks to bypass Algonquin Blvd. from Shirley St., to Lafleur Dr. and onto Laforest Rd. before reaching Hwy. 655. For more information, see: https://www.timmins.ca/cms/One.aspx?portalId=11976429&pageId=19443557.

The following municipal services will be closed or unavailable over the Easter Weekend (April 7 - 10):
- Service Timmins will be closed Easter Friday and Easter Monday.
- There will be no household waste and recycling collection on Easter Friday. Friday’s collection will be completed on Monday, April 10. Collection that falls on Easter Monday will be unaffected and collected as scheduled.
- Deloro Landfill will be closed on Easter Friday.
- Tisdale Transfer Site will be closed on Easter Sunday.
- There will be no Timmins Transit services on Easter Friday and Easter Sunday. Transit services on Easter Monday will be modified to a standard Sunday service: www.timmins.ca/our_services/timmins_transit.
- The Timmins Museum: NEC will be closed on Easter Friday and Easter Monday.
- Both branches of the Timmins Public Library will be closed on Easter Friday, Easter Sunday, and Easter Monday. The library will be open on Saturday between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
- The Archie Dillon Sportsplex Pool is closed Easter Friday, Easter Sunday, and Easter Monday. Regular pool hours on Saturday.

Road conditions are going to change quickly over the next few weeks as we feel the final effects of winter and temperatures begin to rise. What does that mean for drivers? The appearance of potholes and sloppy roads as the snow begins to melt.
Our Public Works Department continues to prioritize snow removal with the goal of getting as much snow off our streets ahead of spring rain. Crews will work to free up catch basins that are still blocked by snow and are necessary to drain surface water. Drivers are asked to use caution as the accumulated snow on our streets softens.
Crews are already addressing road conditions like potholes and ruts. A high-performance cold mix product will be used to temporarily patch holes and ruts ahead of the asphalt plant opening in May. The City’s pothole patcher is back on the road. Drivers are also asked to use caution when driving past road maintenance crews.
The City is required to fix a pothole within a prescribed period as determined by the Provincial government standards, depending on the size of the pothole and whether it is on a paved or an unpaved road. It is important to note that the City’s obligation to fix a pothole is triggered only after the municipality becomes aware of the problem. While we do have crews regularly patrolling the city, you can help by reporting any potholes you encounter. Potholes can be reported to Service Timmins online at service.timmins.ca under roads and sidewalks. You can also report a pothole by phone at 705-264-1331.

Service Timmins is one of six Ontario municipalities taking part in a pilot project that will streamline the marriage licence application process. Through the Marriage Licence Modernization Project, couples can now request a marriage licence online and once approved, pick up and pay for their completed licence at Service Timmins in City Hall.
Completing the online application will take 25-30 minutes and both applicants must be present to submit the application and pick up the licence. All required information and supporting documents must be approved in person at the time the licence is issued.
“Service Timmins is happy to participate in a project that will help us modernize one of our services,” says Director of Community Services, Steph Palmateer. “We typically receive roughly 200 marriage licence applications each year. By submitting the initial application online, residents can save time and have their application approved within 1-2 business days, provided that all required documents are submitted.”
Applying for and receiving a marriage licence comes with the standard $175 fee and the license is valid for use in Ontario for a period of three months.

The best under 18 curlers hurried hard at the 2023 Under 18 Championships last week in Timmins. The event brought in 21 women’s teams and 21 men’s teams from across Canada to compete for the National Championship. It was a significant moment for the McIntyre Curling Club and an opportunity for Tourism Timmins to showcase all that our city has to offer.
How does an event like this impact the community?
Between Feb. 5 and 11, hotels in Timmins hit near sell out. Curling Canada estimates that 1000+ room nights are booked for U-18 Championship events by Curling Canada, not including fans and supporters. Rental agencies at Timmins Victor M. Power Airport reported approximately 100 vehicle rentals that week. 600+ guests visited the Timmins Museum: National Exhibition Centre and the museum’s gift shop tripled sales from the same time last year. 550 game tickets for the event were sold through the McIntyre Curling Club.
“The feedback from teams, visitors, and residents has been fantastic,” says Mayor Michelle Boileau. “The McIntyre Curling Club should be very proud in the efforts they put forward. It was a long week of exciting competition and it highlights how profitable large-scale sports tourism could be for our city and region.”
The event comes at a time when the City is working to update its Culture, Tourism, and Recreation Master Plan. Feedback is being collected through in-person engagement sessions, stakeholder meetings and an online public survey.
“The U-18’s were an example of how the City can work with local organizations to enhance recreation and tourism activities,” says Steph Palmateer, Director of Community Services and City Clerk. “We want to hear from residents, groups, and business owners on what we can do to further improve how the City supports events like the U-18 Championships. I also want to thank our maintenance and arena staff who worked to prepare the facility.”
