Health Canada Invests in Emergency Treatment and Harm Reduction in Timmins

Health Canada is providing $693,434 in funding through the Emergency Treatment Fund (ETF) to enhance local emergency treatment and harm reduction services. The investment was secured through the City of Timmins’ Community Safety and Well-Being (CSWB) and will be distributed to the Timmins and District Hospital (TADH) and Northeastern Public Health (NEPH).

The ETF investment will strengthen community-based response to substance use and related health emergencies by supporting blood-borne infection (BBI) prevention and treatment, withdrawal management, and mobile crisis response services offered through the Timmins and District Hospital. It also enables dedicated outreach capacity for social workers and health workers to improve follow-up and ensure continuity of care for individuals seeking support.

Health Canada’s Emergency Treatment Fund is a time-limited contribution fund that helps municipalities provide rapid response to emergent and critical needs related to substance use and overdose crisis. The ETF supports programs that address urgent and immediate needs as identified by communities, and helps build local capacity to deliver evidence-based and trauma-informed programs and services across Canada.

The City’s Community Safety and Well-Being Plan brings together local partners to identify and respond to priority community health and safety needs. This collaboration underscores the commitment of all partners to improve health outcomes and access to care for vulnerable individuals across the Timmins region.

Quotes:

“There is no one-size-fits-all approach to solving the overdose crisis, and no community can solve it alone. By investing in community-driven, culturally relevant, and evidence-based initiatives, we are making sure people have access to the care and support they need, close to home.”
~ The Honourable Marjorie Michel, Minister of Health

“Improving the outcome of mental health and addictions is a core priority of the City’s Community Safety and Well-Being Plan. Our work to support service delivery at the Timmins and District Hospital and through Northeastern Public Health includes advocating for critical funding to ensure that community members have access to the care and supports they need.”
~ Meagan Baranyk, Community Programs Manager, City of Timmins

"NEPH is committed to advancing equitable access to community education and support. This project will allow for enhanced collaborative efforts, expanded educational opportunities, and strengthened community follow-up resources to facilitate consistent, continuous care for individuals seeking support."
~ Krista Green, Program Manager, Northeastern Public Health

“We see every day how timely care and support can change a person's path toward recovery and wellness. This program will strengthen mobile crisis response, offer assessment, treatment, and support for those facing substance use challenges 7 days a week. By advancing withdrawal management and blood-borne infection prevention and treatment services, we will be helping more people get the care they need."
~ Natalie Carle, Director of Clinical Services at the Timmins and District Hospital
