The City of Timmins has been selected as one of ten communities across Canada to participate in a national initiative led by the Canadian Centre for Safer Communities. The goal is to strengthen the local response to hate, discrimination, polarization, and community harm.
The City will work with the Community Justice Initiatives and the Stronger Cities Network to identify and implement opportunities to improve community resilience and belonging. Participation aligns with the City’s Community Safety and Well-Being Plan, which identifies diversity, equity and inclusion, and shared responsibility as key priorities for creating a safe and welcoming community.
As part of this work, residents are reminded about the online Hate and Discrimination Reporting Tool. Launched in 2024 with Victim Services, the confidential platform allows individuals to report experiences of hate, discrimination, harassment, intimidation, bullying, vandalism, or other bias-related incidents. Information collected helps identify community trends and emerging issues. The local data supports evidence-informed decision-making and provides direction for future education and prevention.
“The more we understand about what people are experiencing, the better positioned we are to respond in meaningful and effective ways,” says Meagan Baranyk, Community Programs Manager. “Through this partnership, we will now have access to national expertise, resources, and leading practices that can be adapted to Timmins’ unique community needs.”
