Porcupine River Bridge closed to drivers, cyclists and pedestrians

Timmins ON - Due to safety concerns about structural integrity, the Porcupine River Bridge on Frederick House Lake Rd. will be closed indefinitely (or for an unknown period of time) to all traffic including drivers, cyclists and pedestrians effective November 22, 2021. Signs alerting travelers to the closure will be posted by November 8.

Getting Around

Those traveling to points east of the bridge can access Frederick House Lake Road via Hwy. 101 and Carrigan Road. Those travelling to points west of the bridge can access via Frederick House Lake Road.

About the Closure

The City is closing the Porcupine River Bridge due to safety concerns about the bridge's condition. City staff and contract engineers have been completing increased inspections of the bridge since 2016 and a downgrading of the bridge carry capacity has already been put in place. These inspections are done to observe deterioration and determine the need for repairs to maintain safe travel conditions over the bridge. In a report dated October 19, 2021, Associated Engineering raised concerns about the bridge's safety, specifically the main support structure (abutments) and guiderail system.

It is of the opinion of Associated Engineering, as well as City Staff, that it is time to indefinitely close the bridge. Further investment in the pre-1930 structure would no longer be feasible nor cost effective at this time. The impact to residents will be minimal as alternative routes are easily accessible. Fire, EMS, and school bus have all been advised. The impact to response times is also minimal, for instance primary fire response from Connaught will see no change.

The City of Timmins will begin a class EA (Environmental Assessment) procedure that includes public consultation concerning replacement and other alternative solutions for the structure. More details, including dates and method of public consultation will be provided once the bridge is closed.

The City of Timmins wishes to advise residents that work on our annual paving program will begin on May 26, 2021 at 6 p.m.

The City is working with Miller Paving to provide partial depth road maintenance to remove and replace the surface layer of asphalt on the program’s approved list of roads, otherwise known as grind and pave work. Partial depth road maintenance is a cost effective way to extend a road’s lifespan.

It is anticipated that work will be completed by the end of October 2021. All streets due for maintenance will remain open during this project. Roadwork is not scheduled by date and location at the start of the paving season. Instead, Miller Paving will schedule work on nearby roads around the same time so they can easily move equipment.

We are asking motorists to proceed with caution when traveling through any and all construction areas, ensuring the safety of everyone involved.

The City of Timmins Engineering Department would like to advise the Public that a Sewer Lining and Manhole Rehabilitation project will be commencing from Tuesday September 08, 2020 until Friday October 30, 2020.

The Engineering Department is advising the residents that we will have crews investigating various sewer main systems within the City of Timmins. Camera trucks and vacuum trucks will be onsite. Residents should be aware they may hear gurgling sounds coming from their toilet or sinks.

During the installation of the new liner, you may notice an odor similar to fiberglass. This odor if detected is coming from your service (connection that runs between your house and sewer main) through in most cases, a dried out drain trap. It is a common occurrence and can be avoided by pouring water into the basement floor drains or any other location (laundry or tub) that may not be in regular use. Pouring water or placing a wet cloth into these locations will prevent the odor from accumulating in your home. Please note that the odor is not harmful.

The following areas will be affected:

  • South Porcupine (Legion, Shamrock, Bloor, Moore, Golden, Quebec, Main, Laffin and Evans)
  • Porcupine (Lamarche Easement)
  • Timmins South (Downtown Timmins laneways, Preston)
  • Timmins North (Seventh Easement )

Traffic controls will be in place and drivers are asked to slow down when proceeding through the work zone.

To minimize face to face contact between residents and on-site staff due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we ask that residents with inquires direct them through Service Timmins at 705-264-1331.

We thank you for your patience and cooperation during this time.
