The City of Timmins (City) is developing a 25-Year Waste Management Master Plan (WMMP) to serve as a roadmap for how waste and diversion services will be managed through to 2051.

The goal of the WMMP is to support a waste management system that protects the environment, operates effectively and continues to provide reliable, high-quality services to the community. Input from people and organizations across Timmins will help the City understand what is working well, where improvements are needed and what priorities should guide the system in the future. The WMMP will also help the City respond to changing provincial requirements, increase reduction and diversion, manage rising costs and plan for the remaining capacity at the Deloro Landfill.

The Deloro Landfill is an important part of the City’s waste management system. It is a carefully managed and engineered facility designed to safely contain waste and protect the surrounding environment. Planning, approving and building a new landfill could take more than a decade and cost local taxpayers tens of millions of dollars. Making responsible use of the remaining capacity at Deloro is therefore important to the City’s environmental and financial future.

The City will follow four steps to identify and evaluate potential options and develop a recommended approach for managing waste over the next 25 years. The findings from each step will come together to form the City’s WMMP.

Your perspectives and everyday experiences with municipal waste programs will help the City understand what is working well, where improvements may be needed and what should be considered as services are planned for the future.

Engagement will also provide an opportunity to learn more about how the City’s engineered waste facilities operate and serve the community.
