January 7, 2019 - The City of Timmins would like to advise that an extreme cold weather alert has been issued for January 7 with temperatures reaching -25 Celsius (inclusive of windchill).

Living Space will continue to operate 24/7-365 programs accommodating 25 people in the existing emergency shelter. Overflow beds are also available at the Timmins Native Friendship Centre between 9 pm and 7 am daily, with the ability to accommodate an additional 50 people.

People in need of emergency shelter are asked to attend the Living Space location (27 Cedar St. N.), at which time staff will assess and refer the individual to the most appropriate shelter location. Living Space Outreach Workers will conduct street-level outreach with the goal of connecting people who are sleeping outside with shelter and/or support.

February 25, 2019 - The extreme cold weather alert has been called back into effect for the City of Timmins until further notice, as nighttime temperatures are expected to remain at or below -27C for the foreseeable future. Volunteers and donations are always welcome. To find out how you can help, please contact Living Space at 705-531-7233.

Living Space has recently expanded its resources, and is now able to accommodate more people, therefore making it the primary shelter.

Living Space (27 Cedar Street North) will be open:
- Daytime from 8 am to 4 pm – Free low-barrier drop-in program
- Evenings from 8 pm to the following morning at 8 am – Free low-barrier emergency shelter

Background:
The Chief Administrative Officer of the City of Timmins will call an alert when Environment Canada predicts overnight temperatures of -27C or lower with or without wind chill, based on warnings from Health Canada of imminent risk of health at that temperature.

Alerts will be issued in the morning before an extremely cold night so community agencies have time to call in extra staff to provide additional services.
