When can I start putting out my signs?

30 days before elections, which is September 24, 2022.

What advertising is included in the definition of "sign"?

According to sign by-law 2012-7223, the definition of "sign" applies to signs placed anywhere including vehicles signs (wrap and magnet), digital boards, interior digital signs. Signs can ONLY be displayed inside a campaign office earlier than 30 days before election.

Does my sign need to include a statement of authorization?

An authorization statement (e.g. authorized by nominee) would only need to be included in advertising that does not include the name of the candidate or by third party advertisers.

Do I have to get an endorsement signature for a School Board Trustee?

No, endorsement signatures are only required if the nominee is running for Mayor or Councillor.

When can I start campaigning?

Nominees can start campaigning once their nomination has been certified. Nominations will be certified on Monday, August 22, 2022. If nominees start campaigning before their nomination is certified, it is at their own risk.

When can I start fundraising for my campaign?

You can start raising money as soon as your nomination papers are submitted.

Do I have to open a campaign bank account?

Yes, if you are raising money, funding your own campaign, or incurring any expenses.  No, if you are not spending money on the campaign. Contributions of goods or services do not require a campaign bank account.

Can I fund my own campaign?

Yes, however there is a limit for self-funding. Refer to Ontario's 2022 Candidate's Guide for more information.  If you borrow money to self-fund the campaign, the loan is not considered a campaign expense. If you contribute towards your campaign directly, not as a loan, the amount does count towards the maximum allowed campaign expense.

Can I apply for more than one position, for example Mayor/Councillor and School Board Trustee?

You cannot apply for more than one office. If you file a nomination for more than one office, the first nomination submitted is considered to have been withdrawn. The office listed in the last nomination filed will be certified as the office that you are running for.

The deadline to file financial statements is March 31, 2023. What happens if my financial statements are not filed in time?

If a candidate is successful (elected) and does not file their financial forms, they will lose their seat and be ineligible to run in the next two elections.
