Detour Routes

Segment 6/7 of the Connecting Link Project will see road improvements along Algonquin Blvd. between Wilcox St. and Cedar St. The work will be extensive and detours are necessary to complete work and ensure the safety of everyone involved.

Stage 1:

At the start of construction, Algonquin Blvd. West will be closed from just east of Preston St. to just west of Elm St. including the Mountjoy St. intersection. Two detour routes will be available heading north and south from Algonquin Blvd.

Vehicles and cyclists can bypass construction heading north along Theriault Blvd. to Vimy Ave. proceeding to Mountjoy St. N. onto Fifth Ave. to Elm St. N. before rejoining Algonquin Blvd. E. To the south, the detour route runs from Cameron St. S. to Commercial Ave. proceeding to Mountjoy St. S. and Third Ave. to Elm St. S. before rejoining Algonquin Blvd. E.

A temporary 4-way stop will be added at the intersection of Theriault Blvd. and Vimy Ave. and a temporary 3-way stop will be added at the intersection of Vimy Ave. and Mountjoy St. N (this stop has now become permanent following City Council approval). Temporary traffic lights will be installed along the southerly route on Cameron St. S. at Commercial Ave. and on Commercial Ave. at Mountjoy S. Cameron St. S. and Wilson Ave. will remain the regular 4-way stop.

It is recommended to use the northerly detour route (Vimy Ave.) when driving west and the southerly detour route (Commercial Ave.) when driving east. This will help maintain a consistent flow of traffic and avoid heavy congestion at Cameron St. and Wilson Ave.

Stage 2:

Once work is complete between Wilcox St. and Mountjoy St. and the Mountjoy intersection is re-opened, all traffic will be diverted down one detour that runs south along Mountjoy St. S. to Second Ave., left on Brunette Rd. before rejoining Algonquin Blvd. E.

Temporary traffic lights will remain at Commercial Ave. and Mountjoy St. S. and be added at Second Ave. and Brunette Rd.

Stop signs along Second Ave. at Balsam St. S. and Spruce St. S. will be removed to improve the flow of traffic moving east/west. Motorists traveling on Spruce and Balsam will still be required to stop and proceed once it is clear to do so.

Truck Detour:

Commercial Motor Vehicles will be using the standard truck detour along Shirley St. to Lafleur Dr. and onto Laforest Rd. before reaching Hwy. 655. Council has approved a temporary speed limit reduction along the truck detour on Airport Rd. The posted speed will be 50 km/h from Laforest Rd. through the area of the Kraft Creek Bridge (approximately 1.25 km's).
