Serving on Municipal Council is an important responsibility that requires a strong understanding of governance, legislation, and community leadership.
This training session is designed for residents who are considering running for Municipal Council in the upcoming 2026 election, who want a better understanding of what the role involves.
Participants will gain insight into:
- The roles and responsibilities of Members of Council, Head of Council, and municipal staff
- How municipal powers are exercised
- Conflict of Interest rules and Code of Conduct requirements
- The role of the Integrity Commissioner
- Strong Mayor Powers and how they impact council governance

Location: Timmins Museum: National Exhibition Centre, 325 Second Ave., Timmins
Registration is required. A $50 registration fee applies and will be fully reimbursed with attendance.

Municipal Elections
The Clerk's Department is responsible for the coordination and management of Municipal Elections. In accordance with the Municipal Elections Act, every four years the City Clerk as Returning Officer, conducts elections for the offices of: Mayor, Councillors, and trustees on the following School Boards: English Language Public, French Language Public, English Language Separate, and French Language Separate.
Am I Eligible to Vote?
If you meet all of the following conditions, you are eligible to vote in a municipal election:
- a Canadian citizen
- at least 18 years old at the time of election
- a resident in the city of Timmins
- a non-resident of Timmins and you or your spouse own or rent property in the city
- not otherwise prohibited under the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 or by law
You can only vote once in a municipal election. You must vote in the Ward that you are registered in as a voter on Election Day.
Voter's List of Electors
The Voters' List of Electors contains the names of all people eligible to vote in a municipal election. The list is provided to the City of Timmins by the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) prior to the next municipal election. If your name is on the list, you will receive a Voter Notification Card in the mail with a letter outlining your date to vote, including advanced polls, and polling station. Information from both the Federal and Provincial elections is different from the Municipal Voter's List.
