The Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT has been raised by 2% to a total of 6% on all short-term accommodation of 30 days or less.
Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT) is a mandatory tax for visitors staying in hotels, motels, bed & breakfasts, or short-term rentals. Visitors staying in these accommodations for 30 days or less will have a 6% MAT charge added to their stay only, and not to other fees like valet parking, laundry service, or meals.
See: Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT) at a rate of 4%. See By-law 2019-8396.
The MAT helps us invest more in tourism. 50% of total MAT revenue is used to promote and grow local tourism by supporting eligible initiatives and organizations through the Timmins Economic Development Corporation (TEDC). The other 50% is reserved for use by the City of Timmins at Council’s direction. MAT helps municipalities invest more in tourism and the community without raising taxes for local residents.

How to Apply for MAT Funding
Revenues collected from the MAT fund are shared with eligible for-profit and not-for-profit tourism initiatives and organizations in the public and private sectors. The funding is designed to promote tourism and product development. One of the objectives is to start to fill in gaps in the tourism landscape.
The funds can be used to add new amenities and experiences to the Timmins' tourism portfolio. Another benefit can be the creation of employment opportunities in the tourism sector.
